Maalhos licensed to operate city hotel
The central government yesterday issued permission for Baa atoll Maalhos to develop and lease on long-term a city hotel in the island.
The decision is expected to usher in various developmental opportunities for the community, along with employment prospects, Maalhos Council said.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed at a ceremony at the tourism ministry by deputy minister Hussain Lirar and the Council’s President Abdulla Shujau.
A 53,000 square foot area has been allocated for the project from the island’s eastern coast, according to Shujau.
The project will be put up for public tender shortly, he said.
“The license to develop a city hotel is great progress for this island,” Shujau said, elaborating that the project will also result in other economic projects to the community.
He said that around 200 Maalhos residents would get jobs once the city hotel is up and running.
Private guesthouses are in operation at Maalhos which is located near Dharavandhoo that has a regional airport.
