Opposition candidate wins Kamadhoo Council seat

Preliminary results showed that the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) candidate Ahmed Sajid won the by-elections of Baa atoll Kamadhoo’s Council.

He obtained 169 votes from the ballot box in the island and 51 from the polling station in the central capital Male’ – in the by-elections held yesterday.

The ruling Progressive Party of Maldives’ (PPM) candidate Ali Nazim obtained 142 votes from the ballot box in Kamadhoo and another 84 from the ballot box in Male’.

The number of eligible voters was 338.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed – of the MDP – tweeted that Sajid’s win not only demonstrated Kamadhoo’s voice against incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom but that it reflected the whole Maldives’ opinion of President Yameen’s administration.
