Inter-atoll cooperation as Maaungoodhoo councilors learn waste management at Maalhos
A team of Councilors from adjacent Shaviyani atoll visited Baa atoll on Monday as an exemplary symbol of cooperation between the atolls of Maldives.
Three Councilors and two staff from Maaungoodhoo island visited Maalhos community and exchanged information and experience on a host of subjects.
They learnt how to produce compost and manage waste.
Maaungoodhoo Councilor Hassan Firdous said that, armed with the new knowledge and training from Maalhos, he would try to initiate programs in his own community such as natural fertilizer production and management of waste such as cans and bottles.
He said that the visit to Maalhos comes as the island located in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa atoll is now among the communities which has the one of the best waste disposal mechanisms in the country.
Firdous went on to say that Maalhos Councilors extended great assistance in making successful the visit by Maaungoodhoo Councilors.
The visiting Councilors yesterday visited Soneva Fushi in Baa atoll to learn more about the resort’s waste disposal systems.
Maalhos Councilor and the training program’s senior official Abdul Matheen Solih said that it was of great satisfaction that the Maaungoodhoo Council chose Maalhos as their destination for “distant learning”.
The visit has encouraged a more concerted effort to strengthen the effectiveness of the waste disposal system in Maalhos, he said.
While all inhabited islands of Baa atoll are preparing to install modern waste disposal apparatuses, Maalhos is currently the only community in the atoll to launch operations of a state-of-the-art waste disposal system.
